[RockmanX] What if ended at X5?

"Based on Inafune's original script draft (the final chapter of the Mega Man X series)..."

Yet, we are currently seeing further sequels to the Mega Man X series.

Then, out of nowhere, a random thought crossed my mind:

"What if they really intended to end the series right at X5? How should the story have unfolded?"

As I followed this train of thought, the plot came together much more solidly than expected, resulting in the following concept.

Please keep in mind that this is purely fan fiction—my own "headcanon"—for Mega Man X fans to judge.

I have only tweaked two major parts:

The events [Before X1] and the overarching narrative structure of [X5].

Gemini and GPT both rated this narrative structure a 98 out of 100. I'm not sure how it will look to you, the readers, but I'm leaving it here in hopes that if someone ever creates a fan game or a remake in the future, this concept might come in handy.

1. [The Discovery of X]

Dr. Cain accidentally discovers the capsule where Mega Man X is sealed. As Thomas Light’s last will and testament plays, Cain learns the true identity and nature of Mega Man X.

2. [Sigma and the Birth of the Reploid Generation]

Afterward, Dr. Cain brings X back to his lab to study him. By mass-producing minor copies of X’s "suffering circuit" (the ability to worry and feel), he creates "Reploids."

Dr. Cain names his very first, most carefully crafted model "Sigma." During this process, X’s capsule evaluation finally returns an "ALL-GREEN" status, and Mega Man X awakens into the world at last.

3. [Reploids and the Emergence of Mavericks]

From this point, Earth begins moving toward a society where humans and Reploids coexist. However, this process brings various side effects.

Reploids who face social disadvantages or unfair treatment start going berserk, and they are given the designation "Mavericks" (Irregulars). Consequently, a specialized combat force called the "Maverick Hunters" is formed in Earth's residential sectors.

Sigma, Dr. Cain's first Reploid, is appointed as the Supreme Commander of the Maverick Hunters and the direct leader of the 17th Elite Unit. Meanwhile, X is also assigned to the 17th Unit, kept under Sigma's watchful eye for observation.

4. [X’s Hesitation]

X carries out his duties as a Maverick Hunter, but he deeply hesitates when it comes to taking lives. In a world where fellow Reploids must fight and kill one another, he finds it difficult to even aim his weapon, even when his comrades are in danger. Because of this, some view X as lacking the core qualities of a hunter. At the same time, his strong desire to save his comrades even in desperate situations earns him immense respect and loyalty from his lower-ranking subordinates.

Sigma reports this behavior to Dr. Cain, who then shares the story of how X was found. However, Sigma dismisses it as a simple programming glitch, concluding that while X can remain active as a hunter, his abilities are nothing worth noting.

5. [The Discovery of Zero]

A Maverick reading is detected in a ruined, long-abandoned laboratory. Sigma dispatches Maverick Hunter "Garma" and his team to suppress the threat, but receives a report that the entire squad has been wiped out. After ordering a nearby backup unit to monitor the Maverick's movements, Sigma personally heads out to eliminate the threat.

Stepping past the doors where the red Maverick is running rampant, Sigma immediately engages him in combat.

A fierce battle ensues between Sigma and the red Maverick. During the clash, Sigma realizes that this red Maverick possesses a dangerous combat system that analyzes and predicts his movements flawlessly—growing stronger and more lethal the longer they fight. Eventually, Sigma is cornered to the brink of death.

But at that exact moment, the red Maverick suddenly clutches his head and screams in agony. Seizing this window of opportunity, Sigma strikes him in the head, successfully shutting down the rampage. Although the scars on Sigma's eyes are later repaired by Dr. Cain, the existence of this red Maverick—the first being to ever hand Sigma a defeat—remains a deeply ingrained trauma.

The red Maverick is moved to a repair facility, and Dr. Cain orders an investigation of the ruined lab to uncover data on him. However, most of the records have been destroyed by Zero's rampage. The only piece of data recovered from a nearby capsule reveals the red Maverick's name: ZERO.

6. [The Rebuilt Zero and the Meeting with X]

Dr. Cain and the repair facility team manage to reconstruct Zero's head parts through guesswork. Strangely, when Zero awakens, he has absolutely no memory of who he is or the fact that he was classified as a rampaging Maverick. However, based on the combat data from his fight with Sigma, Dr. Cain and Sigma recognize Zero's extraordinary talent as a combat Reploid. Under their direction, Zero begins operating as a Maverick Hunter under Sigma's 17th Elite Unit.

With his overwhelming combat prowess, Zero quickly climbs the ranks to become an Special A-Class Hunter. X looks up to Zero with admiration as he continues his hunter duties. Zero, on the other hand, observes X's Buster capabilities during their missions together and begins to highly value X's hidden potential, realizing X is much stronger than he appears.

Connected by the unique bond of being the only distinct human-like Reploids, X and Zero develop a deep mutual understanding and a strong camaraderie.

7. [The Shifting Society and Sigma's Defection]

Amid continuous Maverick outbreaks and relentless hunter operations, cracks begin to form in the coexistence between humans and Reploids.

Living under the constant fear that the Reploid standing right next to them could turn Maverick at any moment, humans begin to view Reploids as dangerous entities. To make matters worse, humanity had already delegated the vast majority of hard labor to Reploids, leading to a massive spike in a non-productive, surplus human population that did nothing but consume city infrastructure, energy, and food resources.

Yet, bound by the grand absolute law of robotics—"Reploids must never harm their creators, humanity"—Reploids begin to face systemic discrimination, starting from minor everyday disadvantages.

Watching this unfold, Sigma questions whether this is truly the ultimate fate of Reploids. He addresses the reality of the unfair treatment his fellow Reploids are facing to Dr. Cain. However, Dr. Cain—now frail, old, and fundamentally a human himself—fails to give Sigma the answer he desires, offering only an ambiguous response. This incident drives Sigma's logic circuits to a definitive conclusion: “We must create a world exclusively for Reploids if we are to escape this injustice.”

From then on, Sigma begins preparing a rebellion, utilizing his immense charisma and power to establish a world solely for Reploids, with himself as its leader.

8. [Before THE DAYS OF SIGMA]

Sigma begins covertly recruiting fellow Maverick Hunters who share his ideals. His primary targets are A-Class or higher Maverick Hunters who manage key facilities and harbor dissatisfaction with the current system and society. He carefully and quietly draws in comrades who hold unyielding convictions, ensuring there is zero chance of a leak.

Furthermore, as Sigma observes the combat data of newly manufactured Reploids, he notices that they are rated much stronger than the generation he first commanded, causing him to worry about his own growth and limitations. During this time, he recalls Dr. Cain's high praise for X from the past, as well as his own life-or-death struggle with Zero in the sealed lab. He searches for data within the lab where Zero was discovered, but finds nothing of significant value.

Ultimately, he reaches one conclusion: There is another persona sleeping inside Zero.

Realizing that this persona operates as a sort of "program," Sigma secretly gathers researchers. He orders them to collect Zero's research data to augment his own combat capabilities, while simultaneously researching the exact conditions required to activate Zero's dormant persona.

9. [THE DAYS OF SIGMA]

On the surface, Abel City enjoys a normal, peaceful day alongside the Maverick Hunters' usual operations. However, everything is already set in motion from underneath. With preparations mostly complete, Sigma executes the final phases of his plan.

First, he releases VAVA (Vile), whose chaotic nature made him easy to manipulate, and invites him to join the cause of creating a world for Reploids. Vile, thrilled by the prospect of a massive rebellion in such a peaceful world, gladly joins Sigma.

Next, Sigma receives the final results of his secret research: proof that a Reploid's consciousness and personality can be extracted and preserved as program data. Once the technology reaches a practical, usable stage, Sigma eliminates all the Reploids at the secret research facilities to destroy the evidence. He then uses the Reploids loyal to him to keep the Hunter Base frantically busy.

To prepare for the possibility of his own defeat, Sigma programs his consciousness and memory data, dispersing and storing it across the digital network. This establishes a foundation for him to reactivate even if his physical body is destroyed. Finally, to eliminate X and Zero—the two biggest potential threats to his uprising—Sigma launches a missile strike on Abel City, the very city he was sworn to protect, officially igniting his rebellion for a Reploid-only world.

However, during the chaos, X awakens to protect Zero. With a final, desperate strike, X inflicts the iconic scars across Sigma's eyes before shutting down from severe damage. This heavily triggers Sigma's past trauma once again. Seeing X—someone he had dismissed as insignificant—wound him just like Zero did, Sigma deeply contemplates Dr. Cain’s past words about "X’s infinite possibilities." Leaving the offline X and Zero behind in the lab, Sigma officially launches his full-scale war.

9-2. [Before X1]

Time passes, and Zero awakens to find X completely non-functional. He rushes X back to the Hunter Base for immediate repairs.

While undergoing maintenance, Zero realizes that Sigma has already commenced his full-scale rebellion. Knowing that Sigma has transformed into a monster he cannot stop alone, and with countless Mavericks under Sigma's command attacking cities, Zero takes to the frontlines. Cooperating with the remaining hunters and Hunter Base operators, Zero dedicates himself to protecting the city until X’s ruptured core can be repaired and he can awaken. During these battles, Zero receives the devastating news that Storm Eagleed (Storm Eagle) was subjugated by Sigma and has betrayed the Maverick Hunters.

10. [X1] START ~ [X4] END : Identical to the original canon. No changes.

11. [X5 Main Mission]

Though the Repliforce War has ended, Sigma continues to drift through the cyber world in the form of a virus. Suddenly, he detects a highly peculiar reaction.

To his surprise, the signal originates from a place deep within his memories: the very laboratory where Zero had been sealed, specifically stemming from something left inside Zero's original capsule.

Discovering a lingering personality program, Sigma realizes that its creator is none other than "Zero's Creator"—the one person who knows Zero better than anyone. Uncovering the absolute truth about Zero, Sigma realizes that the perfect moment for him to strike is when X and Zero are driven to fight and destroy each other. To awaken Zero's true form, Sigma begins listening to the lingering echoes of "Zero's Creator."

Repairs on the space colonies damaged during the Repliforce War (X4) are nearly complete, leaving the colony "Eurasia," located at the Lagrange point, as the only remaining operational space habitat.

However, an unknown force seizes control of Eurasia and begins spreading a virus. This, however, is merely setting the trigger. Once Sigma confirms that Eurasia is completely under his control, he directs an operative to execute the next phase of the plan.

At Hunter Base, Commander Signas detects unusual activity from Eurasia alongside Sigma's signature. He immediately dispatches X and Zero, with Alia serving as their operator. Sigma, hiding inside a giant statue, watches them approach and allows himself to be destroyed by the duo. However, this is a deliberate trap. The moment Sigma's body is shattered, the triggers for the viruses he planted beforehand activate, causing Eurasia to spiral completely out of control.

Following his destruction, Sigma's lingering influence manipulates Eurasia's artificial gravity systems, altering its trajectory into a direct collision course with Earth. According to simulations, Eurasia will crash into Earth within 16 hours, causing catastrophic destruction that could potentially wipe out all life on the planet.

Returning to Earth, X and Zero face a grim reality. Their immediate and only priority is to either destroy the approaching Eurasia or alter its orbit. X and Zero are deployed to secure the necessary resources to power up the ancient laser cannon "Enigma" and the Space Shuttle.

However, the Sigma Virus has already begun corrupting most sectors of Earth. In the midst of this chaos, Zero notices that his body's reaction to the Sigma Virus is completely opposite to that of other Reploids. While Zero questions this anomaly, Signas and Lifesaver keep the truth hidden and closely monitor Zero's vital signs.

Meanwhile, a mysterious mercenary named "Dynamo" suddenly appears, actively hindering their operations. During a clash, Dynamo leaves Zero with a cryptic warning: “You’re the one playing the most important role this time, so make sure to take care of yourself.”

12. [Entering the Zero Space Stages]

Narrowly suppressing the rampaging Mavericks, the Hunter Base successfully gathers the weapons and components needed to execute the operations. By utilizing the Enigma to buy critical time and weaken the structure, they successfully launch the Space Shuttle to intercept and completely obliterate Eurasia.

However, the true battle Sigma had orchestrated was only just beginning.

As the fragments of Eurasia rain down on Earth, a bizarre distortion in space occurs at ground zero. From this anomaly, Zero senses an inexplicable resonance.

As if possessed, and despite the protests of those around him, Zero steps into the distortion alone. Waiting for him inside is the very voice he had heard so many times in his dreams, along with entities that he has never seen before, yet feel deeply familiar to his subconscious.

Worried for his friend, X charges in right after him. However, X’s path is blocked by horrors filled with an unprecedented level of "pure malice and hatred"—the absolute masterpieces created by Zero's Creator during his lifetime.

Eventually, X and Zero reach Sigma. Here, Sigma reveals the ultimate truth regarding Zero's past. Naturally, X and Zero dismiss Sigma’s words as nothing more than the lies of a Maverick and immediately engage him in battle. Upon Sigma's defeat, a massive concentration of the virus erupts from his shattered chassis, directly targeting and enveloping Zero.

13. [The Final Boss Battle]

  • X's Route: vs. Zero's Robot-Destruction Program Persona

(Playable as X in the "Sigma Stage")

As the virus drives Zero's body past the point of no return, Zero uses the last ounce of his strength to tell X to run away. Ultimately, the Robot-Destruction Program fully awakens, and Zero completely loses control of his physical body.

However, X intuitively senses that the sinister program and the Zero he knows are violently fighting for control on the inside. X realizes exactly who has been tormenting his friend all this time, and clarifies who his true enemy is.

Driven by the singular resolve to "save Zero," X charges his Buster once more. He refuses to lose his most precious comrade.

    • Boss: Awakened Zero (or Awakened Zero [True] if the player has been infected by the Sigma/Zero virus $n$ times or more during the playthrough).

  • Zero's Route: vs. Zero's Robot-Destruction Program Persona

(Playable as Zero in the "Sigma Stage")

Engulfed by Sigma's virus, Zero awakens within his own subconscious, realizing X is nowhere nearby. Before long, Zero senses a massive, suffocating energy signature. He looks up to find the Robot-Destruction Program staring back at him within his own mind.

Confronting the program, Zero learns that its sole purpose is to seize absolute control of his body to eradicate both humanity and Reploids—and specifically, it declares its intent to slaughter X, Zero's most cherished friend.

At that moment, Zero feels the impact of X's attacks from the outside world. He realizes that X is currently fighting desperately to save him, and that the malice inside his body is already engaged in a deathmatch with X.

To stop the disaster born within his own frame and to prevent the program from killing X, the noble persona of Zero draws his Z-Saber once more within his mind.

    • Boss: Zero's Robot-Destruction Program Persona / Ultimate Armor X

(The more times the player was infected by the Sigma/Zero virus during the playthrough, the higher Ultimate Armor X's attack power and health become).

14. [Ending]

With X attacking from the outside and Zero striking from the inside, they launch a simultaneous assault on the Robot-Destruction Program. Zero's memory chip overloads, and the destructive persona is successfully purged. However, the back-to-back battles leave both X and Zero completely exhausted and drained of power.

Unable to accept this outcome, Sigma's remaining head core launches one final, spiteful kamikaze strike. Realizing it too late, X and Zero brace for the unavoidable impact. In a split-second decision, Zero shoves X out of the way. X tries to fire his Buster, but with his energy entirely depleted, he can do nothing on his own. Using the last fraction of his strength, X assists Zero's final Buster shot, channeling the energy to help Zero's Saber slice cleanly through Sigma's core, completely erasing Sigma from existence.

With Sigma entirely destroyed, the Zero Space begins to collapse. X desperately tries to carry Zero’s body out, but with his power cells depleted to the point where he cannot even lift his arms, there is nothing he can do.

As his systems rapidly shut down, Zero hands his Z-Saber over to X. He tells X that as long as he exists, a second Sigma will eventually rise to plunge the world into darkness again. He adds that his core has been completely pierced by Sigma's final strike, making physical repair impossible. Urging X to accept his departure, Zero's functions completely cease.

Taking the Z-Saber as a final keepsake, X is forced to leave his friend behind. Upon his return, an immediate search and rescue team is deployed to scour the ruins, but Zero's body is nowhere to be found. The battlefield had been so utterly decimated by the collapse that even recovering fragments proves impossible.

Sometime later, X returns to the frontlines as a Maverick Hunter, wielding Zero's Z-Saber by his side. But as he grips the saber, looking toward the horizon, the eyes of the choosing hero hold no more hesitation.
